All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Islamic organisation in New Delhi, India
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is an Islamic organisation in New Delhi that deals with personal status matters for Muslims in India. It works as a representative body without government ties and gives guidance on issues such as marriage, divorce and inheritance.
Islamic scholars founded the organisation in 1973 in response to parliamentary proposals to change religious family laws. It came about as a reaction to efforts by the Indian government to bring in a common civil code.
The board brings together representatives from different Islamic schools of thought, with 201 members in its general committee and 51 in its executive committee.
The organisation publishes guidelines and documents that help Muslims with legal questions about personal status matters. Its work happens through a network of members who give religious legal opinions and advice on the use of Islamic rules.
The organisation created a standard form for Muslim marriages in 2003 that sets out conditions for cases of dissolution. The document follows the Sunni legal tradition and is used when a marriage takes place.
